Background:

Mallaig Primary School was opened in 1981 and is situated near the centre of the village. Previously the school was a junior secondary with a primary department. It serves the catchment area of Mallaig village, although 'a number of pupils' travel from both Morar and Arisaig. The school is housed in 'attractive' semi-open-plan premises, built in 1981. There are seven class bases with adjacent resource areas, a multi-purpose hall, off which lie a community lounge and school meals kitchen. There are also the usual offices, staff room, medical room and other facilities. A fenced tarmac playground is situated next to the nursery block. The school offers music to all pupils, and it possesses a wide range of instruments. Home Economics, drama, dance and art are also taught alongside the curriculum. Older pupils in the school are now receiving French tuition as part of a new modern languages initiative. The Mallaig Schools Gala Committee was formed in 1992 to raise funds for the school, and it replaces the former parent teacher association. Mallaig Primary has 'good' community links.
